Abstract |

This study aimed to identify the role of gender as a moderator of the relationship between psychological needs and quality of life among a sample of university students with disabilities and to identify the relationship between psychological needs and quality of life. It also aimed to identify the level of both psychological needs and quality of life, and to identify the most common psychological needs and the most common quality of life dimensions among the study sample, in addition to revealing the differences between the mean scores among the study sample in psychological needs and quality of life and their dimensions attributed to the gender variable (males, females) and the type of disability (physical, visual, hearing, speech and language disorders, other). The study sample consisted of (110) undergraduate students with disabilities in Saudi Arabia. The researcher used the correlational comparative statistical approach to achieve the objectives of the study. In addition, she used the scale of psychological needs developed by Abdel-Maqsoud and Al-Sarsi (2001) and validated by Al-Sahli and Al-Hawas (2020), as well as the scale of quality of life developed by the World Health Organization and translated by Ahmed (2013).
The results of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between psychological needs and quality of life, and that gender does not modify the relationship between psychological needs and quality of life among a sample of university students with disabilities. The results also revealed a high level of both psychological needs and quality of life among the study sample, and that the most common psychological need was the need for relatedness, and the most common dimension of quality of life was the environment dimension. The results also showed that there were no differences in the means (averages) of the psychological needs and its dimensions according to gender, and the type of disability. While the results indicated that there were differences in the total means (averages) of the quality of life and its dimensions (physical health, mental health, and environment) according to gender in favor of male students, there were no differences in the means of the quality of life and its dimensions according to the type of disability. The researcher recommended providing various counseling programs that aim to enhance the extent to which students with disabilities satisfy their psychological needs to reach a better level of quality of life. She also recommended providing assistance and support programs that help students with disabilities overcome various social, psychological, and academic obstacles and difficulties.
