Many knowledge management projects fail for many reasons, most commonly, weak governance. Therefore, this study examines the governance of projects and knowledge management projects and their role in bridging the gap between expectations and reality. It suggests a model to govern knowledge management projects bridging gaps between the outputs of planning and implementation stages of projects.
This study followed the qualitative research approach, analyzing content in reviewing the published studies based on governance and knowledge management projects to determine the nature and role of governance in bridging the gap between the planned and implemented projects. It analyzes the thematic content and multiple models in organizations to extract elements of knowledge management projects governance coming up with suggested models for the governance of knowledge management projects. Finally, the study uses a focus group of experts in the field of governance, project management and knowledge management to judge the model.
The study concluded: Project management governance is a system that contains frameworks, responsibilities, functions, processes, structures, and means of obtaining resources that govern project activities and strategic objectives to achieve a unique value, product, or service adhering to the interests of the concerned organization and stakeholders. Also, project management governance has a positive role in bridging the gap aforementioned.
The study extracted sixteen elements of the governance of knowledge management projects divided into three features: structure, project personnel, and project information.
The study suggested a model for the governance of knowledge management projects and its arbitration by presenting it to a focus group of six experts in the respective fields, who confirmed - after adding some recommendations - the effectiveness of the model in achieving the desired goal.
Finally, the study recommended several recommendations, most importantly is that organizations should pay attention to the governance of their knowledge management projects utilizing its components. Also, organizations should determine the appropriate governance model and structure for the operation of their projects and their employees, clarify responsibilities, involve stakeholders, especially ones with the greatest impact, and take care of governing project information. |
