Title of Research: workplace bullying, depression, and self-esteem among Saudi healthcare providers, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.
Introduction: workplace bullying (WPB) is acts and verbal comments that cause psychological harm to coworkers. It affects the workplace by lowering morale and increasing absenteeism. The research problem is the prevalence of WPB is underestimated due to a lack of research on the topic.
Objectives: measure workplace bullying, depression, and self-esteem levels of Saudi healthcare providers, in the ministry of health, governmental hospitals, and primary healthcare centers, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methodology: the study was conducted in 6 hospitals and 15 primary healthcare centers randomly selected in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2022. It involved a self-administered online questionnaire by scanning a barcode for all Saudi healthcare providers working in the ministry of health. In addition to determining the prevalence of workplace bullying and its associated characteristics, such as victims and offenders, the study will also assess depression and self-esteem levels among the participants. Stata 13.1 was used to conduct the statistical analysis. A P-value of less than 0.05 is statistically significant. A pilot study was done to test the questionnaire.
Results: of a total of 604 participants, (66%) were 25-39 years old, and females were (62%). A total of (74%) didn’t expose to WPB, while (15%) were bullied occasionally and victims of WPB was (11%). The prevalence of workplace bullying among females was (71%), also (57.3%) had no depression, (27.5%) had borderline mood disturbance and (15.2%) were depressed, and almost all participants had normal self-esteem levels (99.8%).
Depression was statistically significant with psychological pressure (p-value=0.02), physical activity (p-value =0.003), leadership style (p-value=0.002), stress (p-value=.04), WPB (p-value=0.001), self-esteem (p-value=0.000), stress (p-value=0.04), job (p-value=0.004), department (p-value=0.04), and income (p-value=0.008).
Self-esteem levels was associated with BMI (p-value=0.009), depression (p-value=0.001), department (p-value=0.002), job (p-value=0.002), age (p-value=0.04), leadership style (p-value=0.014), and contract type (p-value=0.01).
Conclusion: workplace bullying is regrettable in every way; it is the right of both employees and patients to work in a safe environment.
