Abstract : Particulate matter is considered to be of grave health concern along with its effects on the environment. Research is usually conducted to characterize, control, and manage the release of particles. In this thesis, we report analysis of PM2.5 collected from Jeddah city atmosphere with regard of their mass concentrations, some rare earth elements that are part of its composition, and black carbon content. An extensive sampling campaign to collect PM2.5 samples was conducted, and 100 samples were obtained using a high-volume sampler. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, microbalance, and Black Carbon Reflectometer were used to obtain respective analytical results. The arithmetic mean of PM2.5 in collected samples in Jeddah city was found to be 68.48 g/m3 with a range of 16.87 - 629.30 g/m3. Black carbon concentration range was 1.28 - 4.54 g/m3 with a mean value of 3.00 g/m3. Black carbon data show that its major sources are transportation and other fossil fuel consuming industries and that it is little affected by long range transport. PM2.5 on the other hand is affected considerably by travelling air masses. The rare earth elements Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Tm, Hf, and Ir were determined in all samples. Results show that their concentrations lie within a pg/m3 regime and that most of them are little enriched. Hf show little to moderate enrichment that could be a result of its use in the polymer industry as a catalyst and in other industries.
