In recent years, more chronic diseases have spread around the world, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks and cancer. The common factor of being susceptible to one of these diseases is obesity. One reason for excess weight is frequent consumption at fast food restaurants. This study aims to examine the impact of eating fast food meals on obesity by analyzing several factors. First, the influence of peer-pressure on fast food consumption and the role of exercising on weight gain. Also, the effect of the availability of fast food restaurants and its affordable prices on obesity.
Four mathematical models are proposed to study each factor separately. The models demonstrate the transmission dynamics of individuals from one class to another according to their BMI. The models are governed by systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. A qualitative approach to solving the systems are utilized. Furthermore, numerical simulations are illustrated to support the qualitative results.
The results of this study may contribute to the development of strategies for controlling obesity. In particular, the first and second models show the importance of resisting the peer-pressure that drives individuals to eat fast food meals, as well as, maximizing the role of quitters in convincing obese individuals to stop consuming fast food meals. Moreover, physical activities, in addition to the two previous strategies, have a significant role in reducing weight. Finally, from the third and fourth model, we conclude that reducing the spread of fast food restaurants and raising the prices of their meals contributes to minimizing obesity in societies. |
