FREQUENCY OF TWO-CANALLED MAXILLARY FIRST MOLARS IN AN ASIATIC POPULATION

Document Language : English
Abstract : The present clinical study was undertaken on 110 maxillary first molars in a group of Asiatic patients. The incidence of two-canalled maxillary first molars in treated and radiographically ex- amined contralateral teeth was investigated. Two patterns of root fusion resulting in two canal systems were found in 6.2% of examined cases. In pattern A, fusion between the distobuccal and the palatal roots resulted in a mesiobuccal and a palatal canal system (1.8%). This pattern was reported twice before. In pattern B, fusion occurred between the buccal roots resulting in a common buccal and a palatal canal (4.4%). This latter result presents a variation of the root canal anatomy previously unreported, and may have a racial basis.
