Abstract
:
This study aims to highlight the phenomenon of squatter settlements in al-Madinah al-Munwwarah and discusses the importance of studying facts and analysis dealing with the phenomenon from a geographical perspective, the study also aims to determine the whereabouts of the squatter settlements, taking into account the identification of social and economic and environmental characteristics of squatter settlements, the study goes to identify access to appropriate solutions to those problems in order to develop and improve this settlements. To achieve these goals the researcher relied in collecting required data, on distribution of a questionnaire on the study community as a key instrument of the field work, the researcher also used some statistical methods to analyze data to draw conclusions of the study such as: (Kai square, correlation coefficient of Spearman, multi regression and etc.) The study reached a number of findings which show that the largest number of the squatter settlements concentrated in the neighborhoods of (Moghaislah), followed by (al- Asefrain) and (Beni Zafar). The study also clarifies that the urban plan's rules contribute in increasing the numbers of squatter settlements in the city because of the lack of its capabilities of absorbing the increasing number of population. The rural migration played a prominent role in spreading of the phenomenon in a number of neighborhoods, as a result of the nature of the immigrants who wish to have their houses in one place. It was shown that there are variations in the degree and types of the squatter settlements due to the history of the buildings and construction materials, and the ease of supplying with public utilities and services. The study concluded with some recommendations that may contribute to upgrade and develop housing in squatter settlements, through adopting public strategies and policies as a way to upgrade the existing buildings in these areas in al- Madinah al-Munwwarah
