The purpose of this research is to identify the areas of difficulty in English adverbials for Saudi female students. The study provides an analysis and an explanation of learners' errors. It also suggests better methods and techniques in dealing with adverbials in English. The study is classified into five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction, which presents an idea about the subjects of the study and their academic background. Research hypotheses, limitations, and the expected contribution of the study are stated. Theories dealing with learners' errors and strategies are discussed showing their advantages and disadvantages. Studies of errors and their causes particularly those including adverbial errors are supplied. Chapter Two is a study of adverbials in both English and Arabic: their definitions, types, forms, positions, and functions, with examples of each. Finally, the main problematic areas in the structure and use of English adverbials are investigated. Chapter Three introduces the method used in collecting data. The subjects of the study (who come from three colleges in the Western region of Saudi Arabia) and the tests used are described. The steps of conducting the pilot study and the final presentation are mentioned. The statistical analyses performed are explained. Chapter four discusses the research findings. In this chapter errors of form, meaning, position, order, and function are investigated showing their causes. The learners' errors in the three colleges referred to in the study are compared. Chapter Five is the conclusion. It summarizes the research and presents some suggestions for the teaching of English adverbials and other suggestions for further research |
