Abstract. The study is concerned with assessment of quality characteristics of drinking water, offered to primary school students in Jeddah
city, regarding the physical aspect. Primary schools include students
highly susceptible to environmental pollution, due to their low awareness concerning to surrounding environmental risks.
The researchers developed a questionnaire distributed to all primary schools. In the light of the questionnaire and well elevation levels of underground water, the researchers selected 30 primary schools
for physical examinations of drinking water. The selected schools
were distributed equally between the north and the south of Jeddah.
Drinking water samples were taken at three times after stagnating in
tanks as follows: In summer, after weekend, and after the end of
Ramadan Holiday. The levels of the following parameters were measured: temperature, total dissolved materials, and suspended solids. The
researchers concluded some suggestions and recommendations concerning: (1) The importance of disinfection of drinking water, (2) The
importance of cleaning drinking water tanks, (3) Under-ground or upfloors especially immediately after vacations and before students consumption, (4) The significance of covering tanks firmly and using insulators of high quality, (5) Changing the internal water net regularly,
and using filters for drinking waters, (6) Increasing awareness between employees and teachers of primary schools, especially in what
concerns drinking water |
