Abstract
:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using static passive stretching on reduction of hip flexion deformity in patients with post-polio syndrome, which consequently contributes to facilitation of normal gait patterns in those patients. The study included thirty two patients from both sexes with age ranged from fourteen to seventeen years. All patients had unilateral affection of the lower extremity with significant hip flexion deformity. The patients were randomly and equally divided into control and study groups. Evaluation of hip range of motion (ROM) and gait parameters including stride length (Str/cm), affected step length / stride length (St / Str %), cadence (Cs / min) and velocity (V cm / sec) was carried out for each patient before and 24 weeks after static passive stretching of the hip flexors, using weight intensity equals to 3% of the patients body weight. Duration for stretching was 45 minutes, performed four times weekly for 24 weeks. In addition, patients in both groups received a traditional program of treatment. Results of the study group at the end of treatment revealed significant reduction in mean values of angle of hip flexion deformity, which was concomitant with significant increasing of the measurable gait parameters. This improvement may be attributed to increased flexibility of the anterior musculature of the hip joint, improved ability to shift weight and improved muscular strength, with subsequent facilitation of functional gait pattern.
