Abstract
:
The purpose of this work was to assess the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on controlling genu recurvatum in hemiplegic cerebral palsied children. The study included twenty cerebral palsied children from both sexes (seven males and thirteen females). They were selected from the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Physical Medicine in Imbaba, according to certain criteria. These children were randomly divided into two groups of equal number, control and study groups. Evaluation procedures including radiological examination of the loaded knee and leg dynamometer were carried out for all patients in both groups before and after the suggested period of treatment. The study group received a program of TENS for one hour, followed by neuro-developmental technique (NDT), while the control group received NDT only. Treatment was conducted for both groups for five times / week at a rate of one session/day, to be continued for 16 successive weeks. Results of the study group at the end of the treatment period showed a significant decrease in mean values of genu recurvatum angles, which was concomitant with a significant improvement in mean values of the strength of the hamstring muscles. On the other hand, results of the control group at the end of the treatment period revealed non-significant changes in all measured parameters. The benefits afforded from this study indicate the utilization of TENS in the management of spasticity with the consequent controlling of genu recurvatum.
