Abstract |

Management of children who are suffering from cerebral palsy needs careful evaluation via a team of experienced specialists. Physical therapist represents one of the specialists dealing with such children. The role of the physical therapist is of a particular importance in reducing exaggerated muscle tone and increasing the functional abilities of the child by using physical means. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of neuro-muscular electrical stimulation in addition to the traditional physical therapy modalities to modulate spasticity of the quadriceps and calf muscles and improve gait pattern in spastic hemiparetic children. Twenty children, twelve males and eight females, were selected from the Out-patient Clinic of the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, with age ranging from four to seven years. They were divided into two groups of equal number; study and control groups, each comprised 10 patients. For both groups, evaluation of muscle tone and gait pattern using Pro-reflex system was done before and after three months of treatment. All patients were subjected to traditional physical therapy program for 3 months, on three-time per week basis. Furthermore, patients belonging to the study group only received electrical stimulation for the hamstring and calf muscles of the affected side. The results revealed significant improvement in all parameters measured in both groups, in favor of the study group. According to this study, supported by results of previous studies, it can be concluded that neuro-muscular electrical stimulation is an effective physical therapy modality to be safely used in the management of hemiparetic cerebral palsy patients as an additional tool to improve functional walking abilities. |
