Abstract
:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vestibular stimulation on improving gait parameters and balance in children, suffering from Down syndrome. Thirty Down syndrome children from both sexes, ranging in age from six to nine years, were selected for this study. They were selected from different primary schools in Giza. The study was carried out in the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University. They were divided randomly into two groups of equal number; study and control groups, each comprised fifteen subjects. All patients received the postural mechanism facilitation program for improving righting, equilibrium and protective reactions. In addition, patients belonging to the study group only had a program of mechanical vestibular stimulation. Treatment of both groups continued for two successive months, three times per week. Evaluation was done before and after the suggested period of treatment, utilizing gait evaluation and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency - Subtest 2 for balance. The results at the end of the treatment period indicated significant improvement in the measured gait parameters in both groups in favor of the study group. Moreover, a significant difference was recorded in balance in the study group only. Such a difference may be attributed to the enhancing effect of the vestibular stimulation program on facilitating voluntary motor control. This may lead to advancement in patients’ functional activities, including walking and balance abilities. It may be concluded that vestibular stimulation can be added to the treatment program of Down syndrome children.
