Abstract
:
To determine the frequency of the metabolic syndrome in admitted type-2 diabetics according to the new WHO criteria and to study it’s relation to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, type-2 diabetics admitted to King Abdulaziz University Hospital from January 1995 to December 1999 were studied. Medical records were reviewed and patient’s age, sex, body mass index (BMI), presence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, ischemic heart disease, stroke and mortality were recorded.. A total of 428 patients were included in the study with mean age of 58 years and BMI of 26. Two-hundred and fifty (58%) were males. Metabolic syndrome was found in 241/428 (56%). Hypertension was the commonest component of the metabolic syndrome followed by hyperlipidemia both were more common in males while obesity was more common in females. The metabolic syndrome and its different components were found to be associated with higher risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke and mortality.
