Abstract : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of passive stretching on hip flexion deformity, gluteus maximus strength and oxygen consumption in children with post-polio syndrome of both sexes, with age ranged from 12 to 14 years. The patients were randomly divided into two groups of equal number: Control and Study groups. The study group received a program of passive stretching of hip flexors using weight intensity equals to 5% of the patient’s body weight for 45 minutes, which was performed three times weekly for 21 weeks. Both groups received a traditional program of treatment. Measurements of hip angle, strength of gluteus maximus and oxygen consumption during walking were carried out before and after the suggested period of treatment. Results at the end of treatment indicated significant differences in favor of the study group. Effectiveness of passive stretching was attributed to increased flexibility of the anterior musculature of the hip joint, associated with increased hip extension, improved muscle strength and decreased gait economy.
